The journal fully adheres to the principles of peer review. The responsibility for peer review is shared among the editorial team, the editorial board, and the specialists who offer their expertise to the journal on an ad hoc basis. This sharing of responsibilities is practiced in the following manner:

  • Any manuscript submitted for publication as an article is evaluated by recognized experts who are selected from the international scientific community. This evaluation respects complete anonymity. Thus, the name of the author of the manuscript is not revealed to the reviewers (i.e., the experts consulted) who are responsible for its evaluation. Similarly, the author is not informed of the names of the reviewers who evaluate his or her manuscript. The selection of reviewers is the responsibility of the editors, who act under the supervision of the journal's editorial board.

  • The evaluation of any manuscript submitted for inclusion in an online section of the journal is the responsibility of the editorial board.

We believe that the peer-review process offers the best conditions for a fair appreciation of the scientific quality of the manuscripts submitted to our journal. To ensure a satisfactory outcome, such a process must rely on the competence, integrity and dedication of all those involved. For this reason, the reviewers and members of the editorial board of the journal are committed to abide by the following rules of ethics:

  • The mandate of reviewers and editorial board members is individual, not institutional.

  • Reviewers and members of the editorial board are independent in the performance of their duties and do not act as promoters of particular interests or groups of people

  • Reviewers and editorial board members are bound by strict confidentiality. They must exercise absolute discretion in the performance of their duties and must not reveal the origin and content of manuscripts, the names of reviewers, or the nature of the evaluation deliberations. Only the editor is authorized to communicate the results of the evaluation to the authors.

  • Reviewers and members of the editorial board must respect the intellectual property of the authors whose manuscripts they review. Under no circumstances may they use or transmit to anyone the manuscripts they evaluate, nor may they appropriate the research results contained therein.

  • Reviewers and members of the editorial board who have any interest, direct or indirect, in a favourable or unfavourable decision regarding the review or publication of a manuscript are in conflict of interest and may not participate in the review process of the manuscript.

  • Reviewers and members of the editorial board who are, or believe they are, in a personal or professional relationship with the author of a manuscript are in conflict of interest and cannot participate in the review process. Specifically, a professional conflict of interest exists if the author and the reviewer (reviewer or editorial board member) are attached to the same university department, laboratory, or research centre; or if they have collaborated on the same research team within the last five years. It is also a conflict of interest if one has supervised or co-supervised the other's thesis.
