Ce texte qui narre le parcours de Stéphanie St-Clair à Harlem, ouvre l’espace romanesque confiantien sur l’Amérique du Nord. Ce faisant, Raphaël Confiant décloisonne son univers référentiel de l’insularité initiale pour s’inscrire plus largement dans une américanité déjà évoquée par Vincent Placoly et Édouard Glissant, entre autres. Il s’agira ainsi de mettre en lumière les éléments qui font de ce roman l’emblème du renouveau littéraire confiantien tant au niveau de l’engagement que sur les plans thématique et énonciatifs. Thirty years after the publication of In Praise of Creolness, the co-authors of this manifesto seem to have exhausted the vein of the creolist novel. Time has come for reinvention. Raphaël Confiant's prolific work draws on multiple resources. We will here focus on his novel Madame St-Clair, published in 2015. This text, which narrates Stéphanie St-Clair's journey in Harlem, opens Confiant’s novel space to North America. By doing so, Raphaël Confiant decompartmentalizes his referential universe from its initial insularity to become more broadly part of an Americanity already evoked by Vincent Placoly and Édouard Glissant, among others.
